In Myanmar Sun Rises Again...

(Free election in Myanmar after years of tyrannical rule marks the victory of human spirit over evil designs.)

The fragrance of democracy spreads in all directions, defying the direction of despotic regime. It has happened in Myanmar after persistent effort of Aung San Suu Kyi, a peace-loving Nobel Laureate and a one man army against the junta. A peaceful war that, too. Another Gandhi! It was not long back that the army had brutalized a nation and trampled hundreds of Buddhist monks peacefully protesting a tyrannical rule. The whole world was shocked then, but our government in India remained unmoved due to some mysterious reasons to the annoyance of the common people. Burma, now Myanmar, was once part of India, and many of our countrymen had teakwood and rice mills there.

Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party has scored a landslide victory by winning so far 40 out of 45 seats. An humble Suu Kyi has pronounced, ‘It is not so much our triumph as a triumph of the people who have decided that they have to be involved in the political process in this country.’ This is very true, for the entire population had given Suu Kyi silent support over the years as the gardener nurtures his plants the whole year till the flowers blossom when the spring arrives. And on this day of election the spring has dawned in Myanmar and the flower of democracy has blossomed. The enthusiasm among the people is without any measure, perhaps comparable to that of our countrymen after getting freedom and having the elections!

May the spirit of democracy live for ever, and the flame of peace burn brighter.
