What is it that invests former UPA minister Mr.Shashi Tharoor with the strange power to divide opinion in both the Congress and the BJP? After Mr. Tharoor was selected among nine national celebrities and invited by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to aid his Swachh Bharat Mission he accepted the invitation and had good words for the PM. This infuriated Congress party colleagues who demand action against him. Equally, while the PM honoured Mr. Tharoor by inviting him as a national celebrity to grace his movement, senior BJP leaders including Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, Mr. Subramaniam Swamy and Mr. O Rajagopal are furiously demanding a probe into Mr. Tharoor’s alleged role in the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. To decode this tangled web the past needs to be recalled.
On 4 July 2014 this writer pointed out the following facts.
A doctor attending to the case alleged pressures on him to wrongly state that Sunanda’s death was from natural causes. Mr. Shashi Tharoor had to resign as Minister due to allegations of accepting a bribe to help the Kochi cricket team. The IPL matches were embroiled in controversy of match fixing and betting syndicates. Sunanda was allegedly a front for money illegally earned by Mr. Tharoor.
Mr. Narendra Modi even taunted Mr. Tharoor: "There was a Congress leader who was a minister in Parliament. He was accused of amassing wealth from cricket. He had said in Parliament that he is not connected to the Rs 50 crore that is in the lady's name. Have you ever heard of a Rs 50 crore girlfriend?” However Sunanda’s death was a sub-plot.
The main plot related to IPL match fixing. According to CBI Dawood Ibrahim generated black money through match fixing to fund terrorists. Just before her death Sunanda met separately with journalists Ms Barkha Dutt and Ms Nalini Singh saying she would expose the truth about IPL to the media. In the light of her threat suspicion about her death pointed to IPL criminals. IPL match fixing continued under gaze of ten members of the IPL Management Board. Among the ten were Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley. One asked if NDA government would pursue the trail of crime and corruption related to IPL match fixing.
Now a fresh autopsy report by All India Medical Institute doctors confirms that Sunanda died by poisoning. But strangely, the Delhi Police Chief has refused to accept the report as being conclusive and has declared that the probe should not be undertaken by any other agency except Delhi Police. Meanwhile the officers probing Sunanda’s death have been reshuffled. The Prime Minister has honoured Mr. Tharoor as a national celebrity to embellish his Swachh Bharat Mission despite his senior party colleagues demanding a probe against Mr. Tharoor. Simultaneously Mr. Tharoor’s removal as Congress spokesperson because he praised the PM is an uncharacteristically mild reprimand. Does he know what we do not about the Volker Report and IPL scam?
