The Legend of the Mangadu Kamakshi Temple 2

Maangaadu is a small town just 24 kms from Chennai city and is located off the Chennai Bangalore highway on the way from Poonamallee to Kunrathur. This is one of the most visited temples in the vicinity of Chennai especially on Sundays and Fridays.

The Sri Chakra in this temple is a rare of its kind in the country and not seen anywhere else. Even today, no abhishekams are performed to the Sri Chakra as it contains rare herbs. Only Kumkuma Archana is performed that too only to the Sri Chakra and not the idol, as the powers of Sri Kamakshi Amman has been instilled in the Chakra by Sri Aadhi Sankaracharya.

A major transformation

Kanchi Paramacharya! The revered Guru, the revered Acharya, Chandrasekhara swamigal, an immortal being -  he was the one who made Mangadu a popular pilgrimage centre. This writer has immensely benefited from the grace of the Paramacharya – it is so unfortunate that I never got to meet him in person. For that, you have to be a good atma, a good soul. But what a guru ! The kind of miracles that he has performed, the kind of foresight and vision he had… Who can deny that he was nothing but God reincarnate.

The idol of Sri Aadhi Kamakshiamman made of Panchaloha (5 metals) was installed by Sri Kanchi Paramacharya Swami in the later years. The revered guru visited the place and understood the reason behind the hesitation of people to enter the shrine. Fear had to be thrown away. He reinstalled the idol of Goddess Kamakshi on the left hand side. In the main sanctum sanctorum, the Acharya installed an idol of Goddess Kamakshi with a sugarcane on one hand and a parrot on the other hand. The Goddess now glowed with a rare radiance and peace in her demeanor.

Drive away worry by praying to Goddess Kamakshi

Everyone who is born in this world succumbs to some sort of misery. Goddess Kamkashi is there in Mangadu, near Chennai, to drive away all your worries and fears. The unique thing about the Goddess is that you have to pray to her for 6 weeks at a stretch to obtain the desirable benefits.

Offerings to Goddess
Turmeric, vermillion, flowers, coconut, camphor, 2 lemons, betel leaf, areca nut.

If you offer two lemons to the Goddess, the priest will return one to you which you can keep in the temple at home. The next week when you visit the shrine, carry this lemon along with the other two fresh lemons. One will be returned to you. The third week carry this lemon along with three other fresh lemons. On the 6th week, when you offer the lemons, none of them will be returned to you. On the 6th week, offer milk to the goddess that has been sweetened with sugar/honey/ cardamom. Once the milk is offered to the Goddess, you may offer it to other devotees in the temple – especially young children.

Goddess Kamakshi is very fond of milk, so this is the reason milk is offered to this deity. If you start praying to the Goddess in this fashion, your desires will be definitely fulfilled. Those who can’t visit the shrine can do the 6-week worship of the Goddess Kamakshi at home. If you can keep  a lemon in front of Goddess Kamakshi’s photograph at home and do the pooja, it is even more auspicious. If you are looking to buy a new home, you will soon buy one. By praying to Goddess Kamakshi, you will definitely

  • Get rid of negative, impure thoughts
  • Get over your anger against God
  • Achieve your desires
  • Get mental peace
  • Get a job of your choice
  • Improve the health and physical wellbeing of all family members
  • Achieve prosperity
  • Overcome depression
Let me repeat that the photograph of Goddess Kamakshi with the sree chakra maha meru is extremely auspicious to keep at home. Millions of people have benefitted immensely from the 6-week pooja of Kamakshi amman. So, why not you?

Why is milk so special? Says Mr Kalyan Kuppuswamy, a resident of Nungambakkam and an ardent devotee of Goddess Kamakshi, “ When Goddess was doing penance in the forest full of mango trees in the shade of a mango tree, the only thing she partook as food was milk. How did she get this milk? When the cowherds used to bring the cows to the forest for grazing, some of the cows used to visit this particular mango tree on their own volition and used to offer milk to the Goddess who of course would not have been visible to an ordinary mortal".

Tuesdays – special days if men want a good job
Today is the era of hire and fire. So, many males are interested in getting a good and secure job. So, if men can pray to Goddess Kamakshi, every Tuesday, for 6 weeks at a stretch, they will experience miracles very soon.
Golden Chariot is very popular here which is pulled everyday between 6.30 and 7.30 pm.

There is a temple for Lord Shiva near the Kamakshi Amman temple which is known as Valleswarar temple. There is a temple for Lord Vishnu also known as Vaikunta Perumal Temple which is near by this Amman temple. Vaikunta Perumal gives darshan to all his devotees along with his consorts Sridevi and BhuDevi.

Darshan Timings :

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturdays – 6.00am to 1.30pm & 3.00pm to 9.30pm

Sunday, Tuesday and Fridays – 5.00am to 10.00pm

Comment Dear Devotees, I came to know about the 6 weeks pooja from my sister and I too completed 5 weeks and tomorrow is the 6th week. When I entered the temple I literally cried before God because of so many problems in my life. But when I looked at the deity her beautiful face assured me peace and happiness. Today, most of my worries vanished even the undurable heel pain also decreased. I am sure God will help those who seeks her blessings. Leave all your worries to her she will get rid of all your problems.Regards .... Nirmala

Comment I have a small query. It is my fifth week of doing the pooja. However, this time i found that the lemon has rotten after 5 days. Is this inauspicious? What is the significance of this? What should I do?

Comment Om Srisairam. I am working in middle east for 30 years. We used to visit Mangadu whenever we visit chennai. When i am abroad i used keep lemon invoking shri Kamakshi and use to pay 6 weeks continuely moring and evening. Every Tuesday I change the lemon. On the 6th week I used to dip all the lemon in the sea and pray. By doing this ritual I got my wishes fullfilled. attained mental peace and equilibrium. Kamakshi have rescued me so may problem inclusive of job related ones. I advise devotees who are unable to visit temple to follow above method to get kamakshi's grace. Devotion and dedication is more important than any outward works. May Godess bless you.

Comment Dear Mr. G.Venkatesh: Very nice and informative article with precious information on the sanctity of Mangadu Kamakshi Amman Koil SriChakra and the information that our reverred Paramacharya was responsible in removing the fears on the minds of Public/devotees inside the temple out of fear by installing the panchaloka idol of Kamakshi with a cane sugar on one hand and a parrot on the other hand. The information of offering lemons for six consecutive weeks and later milk to Goddess Kamakshi was indeed interesting to know Regards, Rajan
