Best Places for a Weekend Getaway...

I work for around 13 hours a day but I would not call myself a workaholic; rather I would say I love my job. I never get bored of it but like any other normal person, even I too need a break. I have been working in Bangalore for around two years now and after working day and night week after week, one does feel like just packing your bag and heading off somewhere. I have always loved travelling but my work generally does not allow me to travel to distant places. The best I can do is to travel within the state.

Often I have heard my colleagues say that there is no place to visit nearby and a holiday to them would mean heading off to places like Nainital and Shimla. But what I feel is most people do not know about all the wonderful places that are in Karnataka. So next time you feel like a weekend get away or something, just keep in mind these places, probably you can save on a lot of time and money.

Amongst all the exquisite places in Karnataka, Coorg tops the list. Dubbed as the Scotland of India, Coorg or Kodagu means “dense forest on steep hill”. Misty hills, lush forest, acres of tea plantation, orange groves, undulating streets and breathtaking views. What more can you ask for?

Not falling much behind Coorg is Chikmagalur. Embraced by lofty hills and splendorous waterfalls Chikmagalur is a sight worth seeing. If you are looking for a quite weekend far from the hustle bustle of the city, this is the place for you.

If you are the kind of person who has keen interest in wildlife then Kabini is where you should be. It is one of the most popular wildlife destinations of Karnataka. This place somehow fits the definition of ‘stunning’ with its lush green landscape surrounding a large picturesque lake, and fantastic sightings of large herds of elephants.

If the summer heat is getting on to you, then the perfect choice for you would be Manchinbele. This place encapsulates the splendour of nature, the fresh air of the open spaces, and a lush reservoir isolated from the din of the city where you can enjoy adventure activities like rappelling, river crossing and cliff jumping. If you are an adventurous kind of person and love water sports, believe me, this is where you should be.

I hope this piece of information serves some purpose to you. The next time when you feel like taking a break, you can take your pick from any of these gorgeous places and make your holiday a truly memorable one.

Comment I very much appreciated your advice on Coorg. I am trying to put together an itinerary for 4 weeks in the month of February/March of 2012 to visit South India.
