While approaching a temple devotees touch the base of temple threshold reverently. It is only to seek the permission of the Lord or Lordess concerned-- akin to ringing a doorbell before calling on someone at his or her house. Some touch the ground near the feet of holy men as though they fear to touch their feet.

We the Indians surprisingly live and multiply on the following premises. ... What we Indians really want and believe is absolute freedom and unbridled indiscipline. We try to camouflage it by adding different colors to it. Whether it is yesterday today or tomorrow India and Indian people are and will be inscrutable.

Dreams are delectably an integral part of our lives. They play themselves out in our sleep only to affect us in unexpected ways while we are awake. In a bitingly powerful manner dreams reflect our thinking bewildering aspirations orientations and specific peculiarities of behaviour. Sometimes they beguile us with images from another world but it is mostly our own relationship tangles and conflicts which express the angst through our dreams.

Out of his curiosity a King had to pay a visit to a famous saint. The sage was sitting on the ground his head down. He was not aware the king was standing next to him. Obviously the king got angry. The saint raised his head and addressed My Lord will you please move a bit I am in a standby mode basking in the sun.

About 365 million years ago all living creatures lived in water and to avoid predation by bigger fishes of smaller fishes Matsyanyaya of Hindu philosophy comparable to a Hobbesian hell some fish tried to eke out a living on land. This required breathing air by lungs and not oxygen from water through the gills. Some fish had developed a buoyant air bladder and this was modified to breathe. Lungfish are a current species which do that. Neil Shubin and his colleagues looked for fish fossils with flat heads powerful shoulder bones and limbs instead of fins.

Amongst the ancient cultures civilizations and countries the Greeks and the Indians stand out in the number of myths and their made up explanations for a host of natural phenomena. On the other hand the Jewish myths which constitute the Old Testament are a diametrically opposite of the minor and irrelevant status of the Jewish kingdoms. They had neither the power wealth or clout to be even a minor player in the arena of the Middle East and were repeatedly dominated and forced to pay tribute to their masters who were Egyptians Hittites Babylonians Assyrians or Persians from time to time. They sought solace in writing imaginary stories about their belated triumph or rescue by their uniquely jealous tyrannical and sadistic god torture of Job or one of his hallucinating prophets.

A recurrent myth in Hindu mythology is prayer and penance by the demons Asuras who are then granted boons ashirwaad by Brahma the creator or Shiva the ascetic. It is then left to Vishnu the crafty sustainer to find a clever way to kill the demon despite the boons without violating the promises of his fellow triumvirate dons.

As a neurologist trying to diagnose Alzheimer s amongst the shortcuts one uses are tests for short term memory. One gives a patient unrelated few phrases to remember like three red roses one white envelope 1700 Sansom Street. One repeats this once again asking the patient to repeat and remember it and then distracts the patient with irrelevant small talk for a few minutes. Then the demand is made for the patient to repeat the series in correct order without prompting or hints. Alzheimer s patients in the early phase fail to repeat correctly. It is not that memory is the sine qua non of Alzheimer s disease.

Current thinking in international relations is generally based on certain premises. First there is no God or Leviathan to truly analyze and adjudicate the behavior and policy of nations. That is why the US refuses to join the International Criminal Court the International Court Of Justice and structured the UN and its Security Council to retain its power and hegemony and insulate it from criticism or sanction by its veto in the third body and non-membership in the first two bodies. Thus might is right and smart nations use propaganda and manipulate facts to justify their purely self-serving actions.

The first obvious and inevitable example of unrequited love is the obsessive attachment to or affliction with god. This is manifested most poetically in Sufism ibn Islam and the Bhakti marga in Hinduism. The now widely available translations of the poems of Rumi are the most popular and best examples of this style in Islam. In Hinduism the best examples are the poems of Meera and they are inordinately beautiful.

Over 2000 years ago a Roman judge in the republic that was eventually destroyed and which the US pretentiously has tried to emulate uttered two words which even today should be the basis of investigative reporting and ultimately justice. The words were Cui Bono or who benefits and were uttered by Lucius Cassius. The equivalent American saying is trace the money.

The title is defined as an uncanny feeling which one experiences in watching or being part of a scene that seems to be a replica sometimes distorted or minimally modified of an event that one has witnessed or been part of before in the past. While it may occur without any specific etiology or disease it is characteristic of temporal lobe or psychomotor epilepsy and often associated with epiphanies and extreme religiosity. An electroencephalogram is a useful test to diagnose it.

For some reason unknown to me the manager and editor of boloji.com chose this path. Whether it was to alert the public and recruit it to the affirmation of his pet peeve or personal philosophy I do not know. I am totally unaware of the financial and egotistic benefits which the editor derives nor do I really care about it.

Ontogeny is the development of an embryo and phylogeny refers to the development of a phylum group of related individuals . Earlier an incorrect belief called recapitulation implied that a given embryo goes through phases starting from the earliest ancestor and metamorphoses to its current form via stages.

The story of life on earth began rather quickly once the planet formed at the right distance from a star sun to permit the presence of liquid H2O water because of ambient temperatures and sufficient mass and resultant gravity. The earth formed roughly 4500 million years ago and as best as can be gleaned from fossil records life unicellular and prokaryotic began between 3500 and 4000 million years ago. Thus within a relatively short time chemistry with the help of physical forces like lightning led to formation of complex molecules and eventually RNA and DNA.

The American people do not realize that the Republicans have a clear agenda which they openly announce. They want to dismantle the programs of FDR and Lyndon Johnson. They also want to sign free trade agreements without constraining regulations pertaining to the environment worker safety and health and minimum standards of worker wages or working conditions. They have the tacit support of the judiciary in that as proven by the US Supreme Court s giving the rights of persons to corporations and permitting unlimited and untraceable political contributions by the Citizens United decision. And to make it worse the Democrats are clandestine partners in the same conspiracy as are the media.

You may remember how a senator aptly named Bogus railroaded the healthcare bill by nixing the public option and kowtowing to insurance company interests with the tacit consent and co-operation of a supine Obama lacking principle or policy intent on winning re-election by selling the American public down the river and catering to the military industrial cabal by starting and continuing wars to the point of national bankruptcy.

Manmohan whose only repertoire is to dance at the tune of Sonia cannot even fiddle on his own so he fiddled by playing musical chairs with cabinet portfolios to match his own incompetence.

The US and Israel initially developed unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance and photographic espionage. Earlier Nazi Germany had developed and used V2 rockets to bombard England. These were incendiary self-destructive devices. Israel with US support used drones to probe Syrian air defenses. The intruding drones led to Syria switching on its air defense radars to target the drones with its Russian surface to air missiles.

Competitive Inhibition

We owe our initial understanding of enzyme substrate interaction to the genius of the great German organic chemist Emil Fischer who came up with the idea of a specific receptacle like structure into which the analogous shape of a substrate fits structurally. The pair fit like a lock and its key. This precise alignment of the key markings and shape fit and permit the turning of the tumblers to unlock. He even took the analogy further by comparing the phenomenon of competitive inhibition by a drug or substance to a key which fits the lock but does not open it thus rendering the lock inaccessible to its natural or preferred substrate. This led to a systematic search and discovery of a variety of enzyme inhibitors to block specific key enzymes.

Deceit as Strategy and Catalyst for Evolution

Smell sound sight taste and touch are five common senses which guide living beings in their survival and search for food and mates. Deception by the senses of touch and taste are not a common occurrence. The sense of smell is often the most important in some of the earlier animal phyla and is used by many orchids to deceive male insects wasps and make them function as pollination messengers. A number of orchid species utilize this strategy and the tongue orchid secretes a specific chemical the pheromone of the wasp Lissopimpla excelsa which wafts into the air and attracts the wasp. Its compound insect eyes see the orchid surface as the color and ultraviolet reflection of the back of a female of its species and it lands and fits snugly into the shape and form of the flower and at times its attempt at copulation even leaves behind its sperm drops on the orchid. It collects the pollen from the plant and flies onwards to be fooled again to achieve the objective of the orchid leaving its own female in the state of Laxman s wife Urmila.

The words of the title attributable to Karl Marx go on to proclaim first as a tragedy and then as a farce . By now my readers know that I have an idle mind and sometimes I sublet it to the Devil to use it as his workshop. Lately I have been reading Quantum Mechanics amongst other things and revising my acquaintance with Feynman diagrams. In one of these an electron and a positron annihilate producing a virtual photon that becomes a quark-antiquark pair. Then one radiates a gluon. It struck me that an electron going forwards in time is the same as a positron going backwards in time. Having understood the complexity of quantum theory despite Feynman s explicit warning I think it is safe to say that no one understands Quantum Mechanics I decided to analyze this business of Osama Bin Laden.

Even though his shenanigans are widely known as certain to fail they were successfully practiced by Bernie Madoff Stanford and sundry listed companies on the US stock exchanges without any diligence supervision or policing by the regulatory agencies like the SEC.

Even a stopped clock is right twice in twenty-four hours so if my occasional predictions or assessments turn out correct even after a few years it is not an occasion for hubris. What is more interesting is that every tissue in the human body has a common origin from a single cell zygote a cell formed by the union of a sperm and ovum and yet develops via its precursor stem cells into a differentiated cell with its unique character but also a limited repertoire.

Mitochondrial Eve our most common recent ancestor on the maternal side lived 150 000 to 200 000 years ago in Africa but she was not the only woman and the corresponding male MRCA lived 120 000 to 150 000 years ago also in Africa and was not the only male. Nor are we all the products of incest as Greek mythology and pharaonic Egyptian custom may suggest. Some millennia later migration occurred out of Africa in multiple tranches with the last batches being Homo Sapiens. Egypt Ethiopia Somalia and Arabia were the earlier transit points and one branch of the final migration proceeded towards India Southeast Asia New Guinea and Australia. Some from Southeast Asia went to Taiwan Philippines and the Pacific islands. Another batch went to the Middle East Eurasia and across the Bering Strait to the Americas. See recent article in Science of unitary origin of language also in Africa on the basis of maximum variety of phonemes.

The industrial revolution in Europe resulted in increased productivity and excess production of goods. It became necessary to ensure a reliable supply of raw materials at a reasonable price and a captive market to export the goods. Many ideas were propounded as gospel starting with mercantilism and then the humbug of David Ricardo s Theory of Comparative Advantage to prevent Portugal from industrializing and continue providing wine to England at low cost in exchange for expensive wool textiles. India was de-industrialized and became a mere supplier of raw cotton and an importer of textiles. This was a 180 degree turn as Britain started the trade with India to import its cotton textiles.

In the animal kingdom flying and wings evolved four times in insects pterodactyl dinosaurs birds and lastly bats who are mammals . Serpents did not evolve wings and pigs don t fly even if you put lipstick on them. though markets do fly if Bernanke puts lipstick on them. It is out of forelimbs that wings evolved first from the biramous leg+gill or branched limbs of water dwelling arthropods in insects the entire arm or upper limb enveloping membrane in birds and as an extension of a wrist membrane in bats and an extension of a finger membrane in pterodactyls. Snakes have lost their front limbs and pigs body size eliminates the physics and aerodynamics of flying.

Polybius has a very neat chronology of government evolution. He postulates that in mere animals or after a catastrophe in human beings leading to a loss of all knowledge of arts and social habits there would be herding together for security and a single individual by virtue of his physical strength and courage would emerge as a leader. Such a one would be a despot. After some time a concept of justice and then reciprocal duty and obligation would tend to bestow the leadership to one who is not only strong and brave but also just and fair.

As many as ten million persons may have died then. The officers of the Company used their administrative power to hoard and profit from grain scarcity and rising prices instead of ameliorating suffering which was their primary responsibility as rulers.

Most leaders of nations are power hungry and do unspeakable things to retain power. Many also enrich themselves obscenely like the Shah of Iran Marcos of Philippines Suharto of Indonesia Mobutu of Congo. Even elected leaders suffer from these character flaws and often make their progeny extremely rich as India s leaders have done. In India the politicians have become dependent on financing their campaigns by the rich elite catering to vote banks and seeking the help of crooked criminal dons to deliver votes by intimidation and coercion. The criminal dons of India have learned that it is better for them to be elected to office rather than depend on a financing a corrupt politician. The net result of this is that the governing parties and politicians have no other purpose in life except to get elected to get rich and exercise the prerogatives of power. They have no vision for the country no knowledge or interest in the betterment of the nation or population and no knowledge interest or intellectual ability to acquire any skills or expertise.

Some two decades ago Martin Bernal wrote Black Athena and raised a firestorm in America and the world. His contention was and is that Egypt is the root of Greek civilization. There is no doubt that Egyptian art and monuments predate Greek ones and the sculptures of the Middle Kingdom of Egypt are vastly superior to its contemporary works in Crete. There are many authorities who dispute and refute Bernal s thesis and not all of them can be dismissed as racially biased. Therefore my thesis may also meet with vehement protests summary denial and contrived arguments but the facts are undeniably in my favor.

It is important to understand that myths often do not represent actual events and even if and when they are real approximations of historical events they reveal on critical analysis to be modifications with covert intentions. The Ramayana as I have previously emphasized is meant to convey specific ideologies. Fraternal devotion partly modeled on primogeniture oldest first is well documented and endlessly promoted as in Bharata s refusal to accept the crown and assuming only a regency while putting Rama s wooden shoes on the throne. Rama reflects the same philosophy when he after killing Ravana dispatches Hanuman to Ayodhya to secretly determine whether Bharata would welcome or resent him before the Deepavali return.

Devayani Yayati Sharmishtha Puru

Devayani the daughter of Asura guru Shukracharya was friends with Sharmishtha the daughter of Asura king Vrishparva. The story is a warning about friendships amongst two persons in a status contest especially when their status is not from their own merit but a mere reflection of their parent s status. They went bathing in a river and the wind blew away their clothes from the banks. Sharmishtha by mistake or design put on Devayani s clothes after failing to find her own and when accused of misbehavior by Devayani threw her into a well.

The Geniuses Behind The Myths

In the era before books and television the myths were memorized and there were families of storytellers Brahmins in ancient India guslars in Yugoslavia even more recently barots in rural Gujarat and Saurashtra. That is why many Hindu myths have more than one version. Perhaps the oral tradition may have inspired the great grammarian Panini to lay down the rules of Sandhi .

Hindu Myths Analyzed

At the time that Hindu myths were conceived there were no printing presses and limited or no writing. Thus there was little hope of the author gaining fame or fortune. It is possible that the author could acquire a local reputation and possibly some sexual conquests but in the primitive societies with concentration of power the only reward was what flattery of the power elite could bring. Hence Vyasa wrote the Mahabharata. By the way he was the love child of Parashar a rishi and Matsyagandha a fisher-girl and by Hindu laws that made him a Brahmin like his father just as despite myriad efforts and infinite penance Vishwamitra competing with Vasishtha a brahma-rishi a kshatriya by birth remained addressed as a raja-rishi. Similarly Valmiki wrote the Ramayana and Firdowsi the Shahnameh.

My Analysis of Hindu Myths

Wendy Doniger a controversial academic who is a professor at University of Chicago has written a recent tome titled Hindus An Alternative History. Her criticisms include a lack of a definitive ethical stance in many of Hindu myths and scriptures labeling Krishna a warmonger and psychosexual distortions of Ganesh s trunk. The book also has praise for Hinduism and is a defense of her criticisms and justification for the rights of non-Hindu Sanskrit and religious scholars to analyze and voice their opinions. It seems to me that she is barking up the wrong tree. One of the prime motivations behind Hindu myths and scriptures was to mold and guide the behavior of the masses ignorant unthinking and of limited intelligence.

In the beginning were simple creatures with no neurons. Then there were those with few neurons and limited brain power. Thus they were restricted to few repertoires which were hard-wired. They could perform single and simple functions corresponding to their primitive circuitry. These were mainly reflexes and instinctual behaviors with minor scope for modification as Kandel showed in Aplysia.
