Kalmadi Must Clarify!
by Rajinder Puri Bookmark and Share

Clearly the CBI for some inexplicable reason will not ask an obvious question. That is no reason for the rest of us to remain silent. The truth about deals related to the Commonwealth Games (CWG) concern the whole nation. The public has a right to know.

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi who was Chairman of the Organizing Committee (OC) of CWG in order to justify the award of the contract for vehicles supplied by AM Films for the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) displayed a letter on TV channels. It was allegedly from Mr. Raju Sebastian representing India’s High Commission in London recommending AM Films as the firm deserving the contract. The High Commission denied authorization of any such letter. The Shungloo Committee probing the CWG scams said that the letter was forged.

Can this episode be simply ignored while conducting investigation of deals related to CWG? Or should the following questions be asked?

Mr. Raju Sebastian must be asked: Did you send any letter? If not, why do you not file a police complaint against Mr. Kalmadi for misusing your name under false pretences?

Mr. Kalmadi should be asked: Was the Shungloo Committee right in asserting that you brandished a forged letter on TV? If not, why do you not contradict it? If so, why did you display a forged letter to mislead the public? An answer must be provided.

The CBI must be asked: Did it probe this letter? If so, why does it not share the information with the public? Why not clear the mystery and explain the glaring contradiction between Mr. Kalmadi’s claim over TV and the finding of the Shungloo Committee?

It is truly strange that such a glaring lapse in investigation has attracted no attention from the CBI. It is stranger that the media which was used to propagate this allegedly fraudulent letter is also silent about this aspect of the QBR scam. It is even stranger that the entire opposition is silent about this aspect highlighted over TV channels. It is strangest of all that even anti-corruption crusaders who day in and day out level corruption charges against political leaders remain silent on this issue.

That is why in this strange, strange situation it becomes the duty of all conscientious citizens to keep hammering away at such a brazen lapse until the truth comes out.
