Lies and Nothing But Lies!

The marksheet scandal has pushed the people of my tiny, beautiful state Meghalaya into a righteous indignation. Articles are being written, jokes are being circulated, the Chief Minister is as adamantine as rock, saying not guilty until proved so etc etc. Some may feel, this is one of those things, it will soon be archived in the annals of history as: ''Once upon a time'', some are so disgusted, that they remain muted. Some are so gleeful, that they say: ''I told you so..'' and so on.

True, that the forty years history of this state has been chequered and beleagured with spineless governments ( except the first one) and corrupt politicians, who would and have done anything, to get a Ministerial berth. There have been notable exceptions, but the rule has been one of insidious power brokering and gambling. And now we hear, courtesy the CBI that the selection of Lower Primary School Teachers, in 2009 has been singed with tampering, with the white fluid, which all government officers do to wipe out an error, here it was used to wipe out a supposedly fair selection, and make it totally false, biased, reeking of nepotism, and ' pressure' from cabinet collagues. How nice!

The seriousness of this perverse and blatant act of corruption has to be read twixt the lines. What is happening to other selections conducted by the government? Are the results declared promptly? Is there transparency, such as the candidate knowing the exact marks he got, a sum of written plus the interview? For banking recriuitment in the country for nationalized banks & the SBI things are very transparent, the candidate can see his/ her score sheet, knows the qualifying mark, where exactly he/she stands. This is transparency at its best, there will be no reason for someone to feel aggrieved, and he/she can improve upon performances.

The state governments while recruiting people for various positions, should follow suit in this fashion, so that credibility is achieved among aspirants. Otherwise neoptism, will ot only rule the roost, it will become leghitimized, and the powerless will become desperate, and may be, even resort to violence. Let us remember that we are dealing with an impressionable group, mostly in such recruitments- the youth. And we know that insurgency is round the corner, unemployment is a viral that fuels it. Why can't our lawmakers be more alive to reality, be more sensitive to the truth, be more friendly to the younger generation, who in their hunt for employment, become embattled forces, scarred with failure?

And now, I go from the specific to the general. This must be taken note of, by all the state governments and the central government. How many scams or scums, will we hear of? How many bells of disenchantment? And most of it relate to the youth. On the one hand we say, bristling with pride, that the youth constitute almost half the country's population. Yes, but what are we doing for them? How are we addressing the unemployment problems? How many loans do we give them to be self employed, what is the arrangement with nationalized banks, for this?

The happening in Meghalaya, leaves a bitter taste, but this has been detected, think of the others which continue to hide as besotted lies, all over the country?
