Filmfare: Why it Sucks!
by Valliyoor Satya Bookmark and Share

Deterioration seems to be the order of the day. The Tehelka expose shocked all of us. Now we only have to read the latest issue of Filmfare to understand how the magazine has deteriorated beyond imagination. Issue after issue has the same topics being regurgitated. Non entities like Vivek Oberoi get featured in the magazine's 10 pages whereas a legend like Manna Dey is confined to 2 pages. Blogs like beetehuedin, memsab story, atulsongaday, cineplot.com are doing a great service to the bygone era but Filmfare. supposedly one of the oldest film magazines has no time, space or inclination for that. If you are going to appoint a 20-something as an editor, what else can you expect?

Earlier there were music reviews. They are no longer there. You have interviews with the same stars who are over exposed. Priyanka Chopra, Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Amitabh, Ranbir Kapoor. Okay, these stars sell, does it mean that the magazine can't devote a few pages to legends like Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Rajendra Kumar, etc etc. Why not carry an interview with Asha Parekh or Simi Garewal ? But no, all this is hard work and Filmfare is not interested. In any case, most of the interviews of these stars are not interviews but fictional accounts by the film journalists themselves. How boring ?

Creativity and imagination have flown out of the window. There is only style, no substance.

Shatrughan Sinha's column is so....o boring, how repititive can he get ? Is he really writing the answers or is someone else writing it on his behalf ?

Does Filmfare have the guts to write about Radha Saluja or Rehana Sultan ?

Or why not carry an interview with Baldev Khosa?

Just like the Filmfare awards that are rigged, the magazine also has gone to the dumps. Earlier, the Times group suspended the publication of The Illustrated Weekly of India. Femina is on its way out. Filmfare also will find its way out, unless something is done on war footing. Bharati S Pradhan, where are you ?

Article Comment Very true. In the Internet era, where every news, rumour and spoiler is available online in minutes, magazines don''t have much to offer. Editors need to work hard and come up with innovative stuff. Otherwise, they would be out of the market. Whether it is the age old Filmfare or a new magazine... Innovation is a must. Sadly, these people do not understand.
