ISKCON monks protest outside Russian consulate
|
Kolkata, Dec 19 (IANS) Nearly 150 monks of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Monday staged a protest outside the Russian consulate here to protest against a possible ban on the Bhagvad Gita in Russia.
The monks also submitted a memorandum to the officials of the consulate.
'Nearly 150 monks have staged a protest outside the Russian consulate. We performed a chorus of 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. We have also submitted a memorandum to the officials. They have assured us that they will send the memorandum to higher officials,' ISKCON official Radha Romon Das said.
In a last ditch effort to save the Bhagvad Gita from a ban, as reported first by IANS, aghast Hindus in Russia appealed to the Siberian court to seek the views of the nation's human rights panel on the religious text and preachings before pronouncing its verdict.
Following their last-minute plea, represented by their advocate Mikhail Fralov, the court in Tomsk city in Siberia has given the human rights panel 24 hours to come with its deposition, following which it will deliver the verdict Tuesday.
