  The streets are agog
with drum beats '
Air is smeared with gulaal.
People are dancing like madmen.
The elephant God is ready to depart.
Riding high on palanquins,
Ganesha is pleased.
The procession will pass
through a circuitous route
blessing all...

Idols, big and small,
by evening will converge
on the lake, and be immersed.
The waters are deep and stirred.
Some boys will help
lower the gypsum Gods.
The idols will take few days
to dissolve...

In the din and dark no one will notice
who goes missing and when.
The lake will throw up
red-green paint,
stale flowers, and dead fish,
the next morning.

From the depths
will emerge
bloated bodies of some boys.
