In the sweep of an eye over the populace,
As is evident in a great shopping mall,
One is struck by an image of universal
Love manifest in members of our race,
Which, when analyzed, is nothing at all,
For the love that's directed in each face
That's exclusive to the known or familial.
To speak of love as a thing of the heart
Demonstrates most vividly the particular
Object of love, emotional, vascular,
Intensely selfish; though it plays the part
Of being sacrificial, it is insular;
But to the world that witnesses the art
Of the universal, it is spectacular.
Love may appear narrow and parochial,
But its glory is all encompassing;
In its fullness, there is nothing that is missing;
But all life gains, its effect is remedial;
The gestures of love, of holding and kissing,
Manifest in behavior the sublime, the ideal
Universal love in hearts ever rising.
