For whom are these masks, pensive boy?
Dyed in the palette of some distant dream?
Only to childlike hearts they bring fun and joy.

Grown-ups their own personal masks employ
In their eyes wariness and distrust gleam!
For whom are these masks, pensive boy?

Their lives are bleached in pretense, ruse and ploy
With subterfuge many elders' lives here teem!
Only to childlike hearts they bring fun and joy.

Adults don't need your bright, fancy toy
Hypocrisy, fawning and plastic smiles they esteem!
For whom are these masks, pensive boy?

Your innocence vestal, your demeanor coy
Your haloed youth ' an untarnished beam!
Only to childlike hearts they bring fun and joy.

Will you also much falsity employ?
Or with crystalline transparency yourself redeem?
For whom are these masks, pensive boy?
Only to childlike hearts they bring fun and joy.
