A Last Visit to the Temple

Just a last visit to the temple, he said
He could barely stand
We knew he was dying
He knew it too!
But he wanted to visit his favorite God.

'Why?" I asked him
You are in so much pain'
your cancer is like needles pricking you everywhere.
'Are you going to thank him for the pain?' I asked sarcastically.
He did not answer!
He was too ashen, too ill to answer my barbs
He just looked ahead.

We reached the temple
He could not even fold his hands properly
It was too painful
But he tried and he succeeded.

I saw the rapt look in his eyes
His eyes brimmed with tears
Was he bidding goodbye to his favorite deity
or was he thanking him
for all the pain...

I never understood God and his unreasonable ways.
And I never understood my logical father why he loved God!
