  Surge
of water and earth
merge
in the mud, the blood
of the land
heart-mind in sacred clouds
washed clean as
the monsoon rains
shroud our bodies.
our feet travel
through soft mud
finding coarse granite gravel
beneath,
a swift descent
from painfree innocence
to gritty reality

Hard rock
unforgiving
to tenderfeet,
all-forgiving
when carved
into Buddha images.
his face
shows both sorrow
and peace
his mouth
a slight curve
reflecting inner vision

Climb the rock face
with eager heart
don't look up
or down,
a lesson
in concentrating
on the present moment.
breathe.
sweat trickles
down the neck
stings the eyes,
distracts the sight.
the air is hot
but damp
never cooling.
breathe.
the heart-mind
senses discomfort
the hands
administer water
while something other
stays cool
and serene

Footsteps bless the earth
connecting points
creating chords
stretching out
five thousand
immeasurable miles
from holy places
to sacred spaces.
hold the course
so that ' come the night -
it's easy to be witness,
to be a pilgrim
for the Light
