Endless Love

I seem to have always loved only you
In different forms in different times
Life after life, age after age.
My spellbound heart
Made garlands of songs
You always accepted them as presents
Life after life, age after age.

As often as I hear
The stories of past loves
The joys and sorrows of passion
Of separation and union
As I go through those stories
Through endless time
What I see to emerge
Through the mists of the past
Is your lovely form
Steady as a star.

We have drifted together
Along the twin flows of love
Flowing from the primeval source
Of human heart
We have played together
Amidst millions of lovers
Happy in union
And crying in separation -
The same old love
Appearing in ever new forms.

Today that endless love
Has culminated in you
And lies at your feet
In myriad colours.
All the joys men have felt
All the sorrows they have suffered
And all their loves
All sweet memories
Have mingled in one love
In one song is being sung
What all the poets have sung.

Transcreation of one of the sweetest love poems - Ananta Prem - from the collection Manasi by Rabindranath Tagore. Poem 6 of Poems is the poet's own translation published posthumously. The original poem in Bengali script may be viewed at
