Those two wistful eyes
I shall forget never...

When the door was opened to me,
he did make a roaring protest
for I was then an unknown guest,
but with a pat, a caress
and a few soft words
he was won over
and didn't leave me a second alone.
Wherever I went, the living room,
the garden or the kitchen
he followed me - a constant companion!

And when I left two days later,
he followed me to the car door,
and in his eyes I clearly could see
nearness in the drops of tear -
my eyes too were dim...

Those two eyes of my niece's dachshund
I shall forget never...
