Indian Bowlers Bite Dust
Cape
Town, Jan 3
A flamboyant unbeaten 76 by Graeme Smith put South Africa on top
against India after the visitors failed building a competent score
on the second day of the crucial third and final Test here
Wednesday.
When the stumps were drawn at the picturesque Newlands stadium,
South Africa were well placed at 144 for one. Hashim Amla (50 not
out) gave Smith apt support and put up a 130-run partnership for the
second wicket.
A.B. de Villiers (1) was the only South African wicket - he edged to
wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik off Sresanth when the team had just 14
runs on board.
Earlier in the day, the Indian middle order failed to capitalize on
a good start and their first innings folded up for 414. Except for a
solid 66 by Sourav Ganguly and a gutsy 63 by Sachin Tendulkar, the
batsman failed to convert their good starts and India failed to get
past the 500 mark.
Debutant Paul Harris picked up four wickets for 129 and Shaun
Pollock scalped four for only 75.
Resuming on their overnight score of 254 for three, India lost their
first wicket of the day in the eighth over when some late movement
off the seam by Dale Steyn fooled V.V.S Laxman (13) and rattled his
stumps.
Ganguly and Tendulkar put on a 68-run partnership for the fifth
wicket and helped India get past the 300-run mark. The duo played
sensibly and it was Ganguly who seemed to be in a murderous mood,
dispatching the South African bowlers to all parts of the ground.
At the start of the innings the southpaw suffered a bad blow when a
short-pitched delivery by Steyn hit him on the ear guard of his
helmet. But after that he looked rock solid and his innings lasted
75 balls that included nine fours and a huge six.
The partnership looked to settle down and India seemed well poised
for a big total when Harris struck to remove Tendulkar.
Tendulkar was caught by surprise as the left arm spinner's delivery
took a sharp turn, gaining an edge on its way to Jacques Kallis in
the slip. His composed innings lasted 130 balls and included 11
fours.
Virender Sehwag, who was demoted to number seven after he struggled
opening the innings in the first two Test matches, showed some
recovery of form and made a quick-fire 40 off 50 deliveries (6x4,
1x6). With Ganguly he added 58 runs for the sixth wicket and spanked
the Pollock and Co to all parts of the stadium.
Just as Sehwag was looking increasingly aggressive, his innings came
to an end when he pulled a short one from Harris and was caught
brilliantly by Makhaya Ntini at deep backward square leg.
The lower order that has contributed significantly of late failed to
repeat that performance. Ganguly also fell short of partners and
after the fall of the ninth wicket he tried to go all out and in an
attempt to hit Pollock through the line he skied it high and was
caught by Amla at mid-off.
