Kumble's Four Scalps Help
India Take 41-Run Lead
Cape Town, Jan 4
Anil Kumble took four wickets to help India bowl out South Africa
for 373 runs in their first innings and take a crucial 41-run lead
on the third day of the third and final Test here Thursday.
India, who had made 414 in their first innings, dominated most of
the day at the Newlands Stadium and ended the day with a distinct
advantage in spite of a fine 94 from captain Graeme Smith (218
minutes, 14x4s, 1x6) and half-centuries from Hashim Amla (63, 212
minutes, 7x4s), Jacques Kallis (54, 162 minutes, 8x4s) and Mark
Boucher (50, 145 minutes, 6x4s).
Even a defiant 69-run partnership between Shaun Pollock and Boucher
failed to steer South Africa ahead of India's first-innings total
that contained a century from Wasim Jaffer and half-centuries from
Dinesh Karthik, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.
India have never won a Test series on South African soil. In fact,
they recorded their maiden Test win in the first match of the
current series in Johannesburg. But South Africa came back to clinch
the second one in Durban to level the three-match series 1-1.
If the Rahul Dravid-led India win this match, they will not only
make history but will wipe out the bad memories of the 1-4 loss to
South Africa in the one-day international series.
Veteran leg-spinner Kumble took four for 117 in 42.3 overs to take
his career tally to 546 and to put the team on path to victory.
Pacer Sreesanth took two wickets while Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel,
Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar each scalped one to raise
visions of history being made.
But for a win to materialize, the Indian batting, which had failed
miserably in the one-day series and in the second Test, will have to
come good on the penultimate day Friday to set up the cushion of a
big total for its bowlers to bowl with.
Play started Thursday with South Africa comfortably placed at 144
for one, with both out-of-form batsmen, Smith and Amla, batting on
76 and 50 respectively. The pair went on to register 159-run stand
for the second wicket after Sreesanth had dismissed A.B. de Villiers
cheaply Wednesday.
Smith missed his 12th Test century by six runs when Sehwag took a
fine diving catch at short mid on off Kumble. Four runs later,
Sreesanth had Amla edging the ball to wicket-keeper Karthik.
Ashwell Prince and Kallis added 83 for the fourth wicket to take the
total to 260 and keep hopes of overtaking India's total alive. But
to the dismay of their teammates, both batsmen departed at the same
score.
First Tendulkar had Kallis mistiming a shot and Patel taking a low
catch at deep mid-wicket and Prince cut a ball from Kumble on to his
stumps.
Herschelle Gibbs, another batsman woefully out of form, also did not
last long and managed just seven. Sehwag had him caught by Jaffer at
forward short leg as the batsman played off his back foot.
It was followed by the 69-run stand between Pollock and Boucher.
Khan broke that stand when he induced an edged from Pollock and
Ganguly took the catch at slips.
Then, in another instance of two South African wickets falling in
succession, Boucher and Dale Steyn were out at 372 and 373. And last
man Makhaya Ntini was also out on 373 to compound the home team's
miseries.
