Sidhu's Wife Tipped
to Contest Amritsar by-poll
Chandigarh, Jan 4
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu Thursday indicated
that his wife, Navjot Kaur, could contest next month's by-election
for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat that he vacated last month following
his conviction in a criminal case.
"There are people in the party and other supporters who have
suggested that she could contest. I leave everything to the top BJP
(Bharatiya Janata Party) leadership," he told reporters here.
Kaur is a practicing government doctor in Patiala.
Sidhu resigned in December following his conviction by the Punjab
and Haryana High court in an 18-year-old road rage case. He was held
guilty, as a scuffle led to the death of Gurnam Singh, 65, in
Patiala town of Punjab in December 1988.
The high court had Dec 6 pronounced a suspended three-year jail term
for Sidhu. He is currently on bail till Jan 31. Sidhu has already
filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the high court's
verdict.
After Sidhu vacated the Amritsar seat that he had won on a BJP
ticket by a big margin of 90,000 votes in May 2004, the Election
Commission announced Feb 13 as date for by-election to the seat.
Voting will take place for the Punjab assembly election polls on the
same date.
BJP sources here said Sidhu and the party were eagerly awaiting the
apex court's ruling on the former explosive batsman's plea.
If the Supreme Court upholds the high court verdict, Sidhu would
have to go to jail and cannot contest. His wife's name was being
proposed for such a situation, according to a party source.
He would contest the by-poll if the apex court strikes down his
conviction, the source said.
