Suspected Kashmiri
Militant
Nabbed near Bangalore
Bangalore, Jan 5
In a swift one-hour operation, the Bangalore police Friday nabbed a
suspected Kashmiri militant as he was alighting from a bus near here
and seized arms and ammunition from him, besides sketches of
important places in the city.
Karnataka director-general of police (DGP) K.R. Srinivasan told
reporters the accused, named Imran alias Bilal (32), was trapped by
a police team on the outskirts of the city after he arrived by a
private bus that came from Hospet in Bellary district, about 350 km
from here.
"A trap was laid to nab Imran, on a tip-off from the central and
state intelligence agencies that a suspected militant carrying arms
and ammunition was arriving in the city from Hospet by bus. On
searching his luggage, one AK assault rifle, 300 rounds of
ammunition, four AK 47 magazines and five hand grenades were found,"
Srinivasan said.
The accused was produced before a local magistrate for a 14-day
police remand for interrogation and further investigation. Police
have registered a case against Imran under the Arms Act, Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosives Act.
"We have also recovered a couple of mobile phones, additional SIM
cards, a satellite phone and a few incriminating documents,
including a map of Bangalore, a few sketches depicting important
buildings and vital installations in the city and some literature,"
Srinivasan said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused hails from Jammu
and Kashmir. Police suspect Imran may have more than one accomplice
in carrying out terror attacks, including triggering explosives in
sensitive areas or on vital installations to cause maximum damage to
life and property.
"It is too early for us to divulge more information about the
suspected militant's motives and why he was carrying the arms and
ammunition. We have sought his remand to find out his antecedents,
when he entered the state, how long he has been staying at Hospet
and who are all involved with him," Srinivasan pointed out.
Besides subjecting the accused to a polygraph test, brain mapping
and narco-analysis, the state police plan to take the assistance of
the Jammu and Kashmir police and central intelligence sleuths to
bust the terror plans.
Imran's arrest comes two months after two Pakistani-based suspected
militants were arrested near Mysore in a police encounter Oct 27.
Arms, ammunition and explosives were also seized from them, besides
mobile phones, satellite phones and incriminating materials,
indicating plans to unleash terror activities.
A Delhi professor was killed in a shootout over a year ago by
suspected militants in the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
campus, leading to the arrest of its alleged conspirators and
busting of some terror modules in south India.
