Amarinder Vows to
'Hammer' Akalis
Chandigarh, Jan 5
Terming one's opponents as "murderers", "thieves" and "mouse" and
saying that "I will take two minutes to hammer them" may not be
politically decent language, but Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder
Singh has no qualms about using it
At a press conference here Friday where he and state Congress
president Shamsher Singh Dullo were to speak about the ruling
party's preparedness for the Feb 13 assembly polls, Amarinder Singh
said the main opposition Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)
combine was being led by "murderers and thieves".
The obvious reference for murderer was to
cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu - who was recently
convicted by the high court here for causing death of a man in an
18-year-old road rage incident. The reference to thief was to Akali
Dal president Parkash Singh Badal who is facing corruption charges.
The chief minister was in an offensive mood Friday following
criticism from the opposition that he was busy hosting Pakistani
guests without valid visa in Rajasthan rather than concentrating on
campaigning for the Congress in Punjab.
"Tell the Badals (Parkash Singh and his son Sukhbir Singh) that
their 'baap' (father) has returned. I will tell them where they
stand. It will take me only two minutes to hammer them out,"
Amarinder Singh said.
He regretted that the Akalis and BJP could not find any better
leaders than "murderers and thieves" to lead them in the state.
Amarinder said he and his party were not going to sit back if the
opposition attacked them.
"If they stoop to a low level, we will hit them back properly. We
will challenge them in everything. For every attack from them, we
will hit back with two," he said.
