Humanity! I have often favored you
In that general term, making one being,
An exception to the rule
Of selfish human beings we all are.

I have filled you with the essence
Of unity, and spread your large canvas
Over the earth, transforming
The nations in your image and likeness.

But on each encounter with a real
Person, I am struck by an original
Claim that curdles your milky flow
Into selfish preoccupation.

How quickly you convert into
An abstraction, something talked about
As if you were other from humankind,
To be invoked as its savior.
