Theme: Proximity

Close To Nature...

After an overnight medium shower,
it is mid-May by the way,
in the morning when I went up the terrace
to feed three dozen odd pigeons,
I saw the innocent ones
briskly moving up and down
to pick up something that I can
hardly see.

The grains I spread
they ate with relish,
but instead of quenching their thirst
they bathed in the bowl of water I kept nearby,
spreading their wings to dry

And surprised me by leaning their beaks
to drink from the shallow puddles of water
that came down from the clear night sky.

They prefer to be ‘free birds’,
and instead of depending on us
try to be close to nature!
… but why we humans, take pleasure
in distancing ourselves from that great splendour?

Comment Thank you, Rupa. As a child you would have chased small birds; is it not! There is always great pleasure in chasing a butterfly, a garden lizard or a squirrel!
