Theme: Sister

Hands That Tie Rakhis

Bhaskar31.jpg

The hands that tie Rakhis
Are manhandled, unmanly
Twisted inhumanely,
The knot of love is untied
As the full-moon day
Steps into the dark nights.
The fingers that apply
Vermilion on their foreheads
Are so cruelly broken,
Nailed, callously uprooted;
Their heads remain unbowed
To their chastity buried!

All promises are broken
Nullified as proven true lies
The bonds and bondage
Cemented in one section
Are sadly shattered by another
Ruling a patriarchal society.

If sanctity of a sister's soul
Praying for safety and security
Of the brothers of the world
Is vilely soiled and defiled,
In broad daylight, or in house,
If a woman feels insecure
In every corner of her life,
Tying Rakhis on the weak wrists
Loses its inherent meanings
Putting the brotherly sections
To their ignominious shame…!

O Brethren! Let’s protect
The hands that tie Rakhis on us!
The threads of sibling bonds
That bind us together lifelong
To the sacred side of humanity.
