People laughing!
I am not cheerful because they are laughing at me.
They think they are flawless so they sing,
But they see me and then their teasing begins.

It is my first day at my new school.
I haven't made a single companion.
The students are not interested
In making friends with one who is ugly in comparison.

I am ugly I agree.
My difference is that I am not as pretty as those around.
My face is marked and I am hideous to see.
But I wonder why they should tease me?

I used to be appealing at one time.
But destiny changed my face and my life.
A fire broke out in my house and I was captured by it
The raging fire consumed my body.

I skulk through the corridors of school.
Terrified to show my unsightly face.
Fearful that people will reject me, mock me
Ignore me and I'll be lonesome in this place.

I need someone I can turn to.
A person prepared to always lend a helping hand.
Someone to lift my spirits when I'm feeling down,
A person who will never crush me underfoot like sand.

My eyes are now red from weeping.
Tear marks streak across this scarred face of mine.
I gasp for breath and then hear someone say
"Hello, are you okay?"

I dare not turn around lest my face causes alarm.
But before I can hold my ground she turns me gently to face her.
I gaze at her and her face wrinkles into a grimace.
Wait! No she is smiling and she looks at me with warmth.

Introducing herself she takes my hand in hers.
Am I dreaming can this be true?
This girl is leading me through the corridors,
Out into the yard under the sky so blue.

My hand firmly in hers, we stroll together we laugh and talk.
We come across a pond and she looks in.
As she does she urges me to do the same.
I hesitate but soon take a peek, a face peeks back at me.

This face is pretty and her lips are stretched into a broad smile.
The girl in the pond is none other than me.
Transformed by the love of one person,
By this girl standing next to me, hand in hand we stand.
She is my friend, that person who will always lend me a helping hand.
