Theme: Grit

Miles to go Before I Sleep

I would have given up long back
And shriveled under a rock
I would have written a note saying
I just couldn’t take stock.

I would have hung myself on
A rope or jumped off a cliff
I would have committed harakiri
Through the point on my mid riff.

I would have drunk rat poison
Or gulped down sleeping pills
Said goodbye to the world at large
And be done with its ills.

I would have admitted defeat
and epitaphed that I was done
that in the battle of this life
it was clear life had won.

I would have laid my head down low
Into an oblivion deep.
Only if God hadn’t given me the urge
The consuming passion, desire to purge
Myself of my duty to be.

So although I weep
I still have promises to keep.
And miles to go before I sleep.
And miles to go before I sleep.
