The End of Music

"Music is the purest art": the thistle

springs in the mind among the herbs;

the rain swishes clean in its curtain

of violins; and resonance embodies

what the universe of stars and walks

of power! - here resolves the dilemma:

green springs the note or thundering

grey: a grand shrouded ordering.

So why should I not smash this earthen

image! Not in preferment to the music

of the winds: I live in the 21st century.

But to deafen the centuries, and turning back

the composers' scores to find what each

had aimed at in a thousand ways was silence.
