Death of an Atheist

Here lies Anna the Atheist
All dressed, nowhere to go
Lived her life on her terms
She lived a while ago

She lived a full, five score ten
Died of an infected lung
Grieved her six generation folks
'Only the Good Die Young’

Her father Fiddle Jonathan
Died the 7th of June
A ‘village piper’ to his friends
Went early out of tune !

Her brother, a wealthy lawyer
His epitaph, Sir John Strange
“Here lies an honest lawyer “
Isn't that very strange

Her sister, a miserly spinster
The pennies with her did keep
If cash you are in want of some
Go dig some six feet deep!

But Norman wished her as his wife
Addressed her ‘My Sweet Manna*’
The Lord but willed it otherwise
The Devil wed him Anna

Now hereunder a tree she rests
Not age that took its toll
A peel of a banana did it all ?
And that is what I’m told

“Remember you all as pass me by
Like you are now, so once was I
As I am now, you too shall be
Soon you all shall follow me”

On her tomb these words inscribed
To which someone in jest replied
“To follow an Atheist, who would consent
God alone knows where she went? ”

NB: "Manna ( Hebrew ) or Manna wa salwa ( Arabic ) is the name of a food that God provided to the Israelites during their travels in the desert, as recorded in the Bible."
