They fought as any couple does
specially those who fancy themselves
to be the ideal.
With violence and intimidation
and articulate acrimony
With the ferocity of snakes
albeit partially defanged
The bites delivered in hissed whispers
beyond the neighbour's prying ear-shot
And if asked about love,
would run for the masks hung conveniently nearby
And say with a smile.......
