Better Than The Best

They hear with their souls
They speak with their hearts,
Profiles in courage
They truly stand apart.

With bright sparkling eyes
And truly dazzling smiles,
They radiate a warmth
That spreads across miles

For them every hour is a battle
Every day a tough war,
Yet they fight on
Unmindful of every wound or scar.

They don’t wallow in pity
Nor brood over what they lack,
Making the best use of their talents
They fight away the dark.

Content in their own world
Of frantic gestures and deafening silence,
They are objects of ridicule
For their impaired existence.

We treat them as freaks
As creatures who need sympathy,
All that they need is love
Our understanding and empathy.

We need to treat them as equals
Not children of a lesser God,
But as special kids with abilities
To fight against all odds.

Let us replace pity with love
And ridicule with lots of trust,
And I am sure they will emerge
Better than the best.
