Dance Lessons

Think about who you are
and you'll come back to me
just as if my heart is an anchor
and the city is swept up
in the magic of a song
that holds so perfect a melody
and gets easier to move with
when you change partners

In your experience of the world
how do people change?

Teach me so I'll fall in love
with soft lips and whispers
and go on across this landscape
abandoning the idea of laughing
the idea of love
for the real thing

like opening every window
on mid winter mornings
to feel the tension on my skin
and feel alive again
when everyone else has abandoned the struggle
because they're afraid to look
deep into the miasma of the world

they search the absolute bottom
as we sing the word 'free' so high
no one can reach it

and when they move towards
what they will become
we can stand still and watch and wave

we don't know their world anymore
when we change partners
