Vagabond Fantasy

Early evening in the square
with their two newspapers unfolding
thin black lines tell the story
of a crumpled bitter year

Words like 'debacle',
'catastrophe', and 'nightmare'
are bandied about
until a sufficiently clever word

breaks beyond the reach of evening
through lines these actor speak
in this play within a play
that can never be interpreted as real life

How peaceful here in Rainbow Acres
as they settle close into comfortable heartbeats
retreating under their umbrella
as the spring rain settles down

When they set off for the train
they don't care that they are late
nothing is ever provable here
they are the first 'incompleteness' theorem
