Theme : Mythology
Abhisar

Planting thorns in her courtyard
She walks over them
In soft careful steps
Muffling her jingling anklets with her dress.
She makes it slippery
Pouring water from her pitcher
And steadying her steps with her toes
All these she practices at home secretly at night
For the long and difficult journey to her love.

It may be quite dark
So she walks blindfold
Covering her eyes with her palms
From a professional charmer
She learns how to charm poisonous snakes
Paying him pawning her jewels
To her elders she seems to have become totally deaf
Often giving meaningless answers to their queries
From the way she behaves with her relations
It is Govindadasa’s guess
She must be completely out of her senses.

Kumud Biswas
September 4, 2005

Trancreation of the Vaishnava poet Govindadasa’s famous song on  Radha’s rendezvous with Krishna -

‘Kantaka garhi kamalsama padatala manjira chirahi jhapi
Gagari bari dhari kori pichhala chalatahi anguli chapi
Madhaba tua abhisaraka lagi
Dutara pantha gaman dhani sadhaye mandire jamini jagi’
– etc.
