Theme : Poetry for Children
Mississippi Maude
by Philip G. Bell

You’ve heard of Billy the Kid
Of the Dalton Brothers too
And many other outlaws
They were wicked through and through

But the wickedest of them all by far
According to my Uncle Claude
Was a famous female outlaw
Known as Mississippi Maude

She grew up on the River Boats
From the tender age of six
And learned to be a card sharp
And boy she knew some tricks

But one day on the river
A Dude called her a cheat
And Maude she used a pistol
And blew him off his seat

She fled the riverboat straight away
The Law in hot pursuit
And took off to the Bad-Lands
With her ill-gained loot

But as the cash soon went away
She took to robbing banks
More polite a robber was never seen
Always saying "Thanks"

After many years of crime
She put her guns away
And moved on to a city
Gone straight for a month and a day

She got a job in a major bank
Became Chief Accountant Maude
But yes you’ve already guessed it
She was finally done for Fraud

And so in Jail she lingered
Until that fateful day
Mississippi Maude lay right down
And then she passed away.
