Theme :  Tolerance
Walls
by  Dr. Christine Redman-Waldeyer

Name our language and its rite of passage
Rake through the stubborn soil
To call upon these aliens chained in vassalage
And comb the air with toil

We shout this is our land
And forget our fathers
They’ve thrown the numbers in the sand
And take the suckling babes from mothers

So then we erect a wall
And grand it is along the border
If it cannot be pushed to fall
They find a shovel and move on order

These trees they’ve planted though are deep
Roots the rodents brace upon chew through
For too high is this fence to leap
We command them to kiss the Fox in lieu

Partisan fears and all that rains
This cistern catches those poisoned waters
For all the ghosts of this land who died in vain
I kept at hand Divine Lawyers

They come as our Mother Cow
Who reigns still amongst us
And I humble to her feet and bow
For she wills me to see the evils and thrust

Keats who questioned the rebuilding of walls
And Hughes who broke it down black and white
Can we learn from poets from what God calls?
And can we vow to understand such flights?

My shovel is my pen and I am in the dirt
Wringing my hands through its life
And with this and politics I flirt
For I am always for Him a wife

These slippers of tolerance I slip on feet
This pipe I light is to signal
On the sofa recline to meet
What is cooking in my kitchen as feast and final
