Is Success the Only Deity?

You need a commitment,
A rigorous discipline and
The fear of annihilating defeat
In order to succeed.
Remember, both body and mind
Have to be disciplined,
Made to conform to a schedule,
Forced to live up to an expectation.
Growing up in an unequal society
In a third world country
You soon realize the privations
Illiteracy and poverty can create.
You are taught both at home
And at school to push yourself
Very hard, lest you be beaten down
By the smart brains or the smart alecks.

Then you come to the first world
And find that middle class kids
Just trudge along at the university
Without any ambition to succeed.
They don't bother to find out
If they're getting a bad deal or
Others are doing better than them,
They lack the ambition to self-improve.
They are satisfied with part-time work,
Spend their time eating and sleeping,
They reject the social system
Just to be with friends.
It all depends where you are,
What kind of future you envisage;
Then you can decide whether
To worship Sarasvati or Aergia!
