Theme : Change
Fragmented Demolitions
by Neelam Karki Niharika

The house must be reconstructed
From the foundation
From the beginning
This is the decision of those
Who have seen the house
This is the decision of those
Who reside there

For reconstruction
The old house would be knocked down
To build a new one

Those who got the contract
Begin to demolish
At first they entered inside
By unlocking the door
And destroyed the hinge
Destroyed the lock
The lock that was shared by the house
Got destroyed with its sharing

In the duty of destruction –
Some took the wall
Some took the courtyard
Some took the upper floor
Some took the ceiling-beam
Some took the window
Some took the balcony
Some took the roof
Some took the foundation

The crowd had gathered to see
The demolition
Of separated portions
The bewildered eyes
See the house collapsed

Observant comments
Arise from the onlookers –
The roof should be removed first
Others say
The wall should be knockdown
Yet others say
The window should be taken off

If the old house has to be ruined
And ripped through the foundation
Why then the ideas of
Fragmented Demolitions!

If it knocks down in a second
If it knocks down in a blow
Why this supervision?
For what these fragmented attempts
Of demolition?

Let it not be so

Let not another carpenter
Or another builder come

Let not that old house
Grow stronger
Awaiting for tomorrow
With a much bigger wall
Surrounding the house.
