Theme : Beauty
Ancient Indian Ballad Chitra! Chitra!
by Mukesh Williams

To your mocha form I sing
To ho, I praise thee
Chitra! Chitra!

Though you’re beyond
The bitter waters of Godavari
Beguiled not to respond

And I banished from my country
Under a soul-lit sky
Bound by a decree

I will not stop to sing
In the teeth of a relentless gale
Chitra! Chitra!

I will not lament tonight
Your ivory-carved delight
That has put the light to flight

Nor will I bemoan the plight
Of your two perfect mares
Yoked to the chariot of the night

Tawny mounts whose manes
Spread in the fragrant wind
Yearning to be contained

Reverent to regions unknown
I will travel for thee
Chitra! Chitra!

A fish-rippling belly
Tender work of summer tan
The musk in your niche

To the black-eyed Eve
I impetuously sing
Chitra! Chitra!

On a white pearl bed
Inlaid with tasseled gold
Your auriferous divinity unfold

You stream of summer love
Lovely shadow on the snow
Chitra! Chitra!

Your pear-shaped smile
A celestial dream on a night-sky
Sophisticated sorceress

A sonsy lass
To you I sing and louder sing
Chitra! Chitra!
