World Hindi Day
Celebrated in London

It was a new
experience for me when I was invited to a public function organized at
India House, London (the High Commission of India in London) on 16th
February 2008 to felicitate Hindi scholars.
Awards were declared by the High Commission on the occasion of World
Hindi Day i.e. 10th January. High Commission of India at London had
instituted these awards in 2006. Following persons/organizations were
felicitated on this occasion with a Commendation Certificate and a
shawl, presented to them by the Minister (Coordination) - Mr Rajat
Bagchi.
Well known Hindi writer Tejinder Sharma whose collection of short
stories, translated into Urdu, EentoN ka Jungle has already
received warm welcome from the readers, was honored with Dr. Harivansh
Rai Bachhan Lekhan Samman. Tejinder writes with ease in English as well
Hindi. Last year his biography of a banker –
Black & White was launched at Grims
Dyke Hotel in Harrow. He is also the General Secretary of Katha UK and
Forum for Indian Languages and Literature.
In the same function Mr. Ved Mitra Mohla was honored with John Gilchrist
U.K. Hindi Shikshan Sammaan for his contribution to teaching of Hindi
language in the United Kingdom. Aacharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi U.K.
Hindi Patrakaaritaa Sammaan was bestowed upon the Sunrise Radio. This
Radio Station has been entertaining UK Asians since 1989. UK U.K. Hindi
Samiti was given Fredrick Pincott U.K. Hindi Prachaar Prasaar Sammaan.
On this occasion Dr. Francesca Orsini, a lecturer of Hindi in SOAS,
University of London was also felicitated. She could not accept
personally her award at World Hindi Conference held in New York in July,
2007. A commendation letter, a shawl and a memento were presented to her
by Mr Rajat Bagchi, Minister (Coordination) in the High Commission, on
behalf of Govt.of India.
The children of the staff members of High Commission were also given
prizes for their achievement in Hindi learning by Sh Rajesh Srivastava,
FS (Culture) amongh others.
A new scheme ‘Dr.
Laxmi Mall Singhvi UK Hindi Prakaashan Sahaayataa Yojanaa’ was launched
on this occasion, with the approval of Ministry of External Affairs of
India. Hindi writers Mr Mohan Rana (Bath) and Mrs Swarn Talwar
(Birmingham) were given Rs. 20,000/- each for helping them publish their
books.
Announcement was
also made about the establishment of Great Britain Hindi Lekhak Sangh
(Great Britain Hindi Writers' Association), to facilitate Hindi writers
of UK to organize themselves as a single entity.
Among others present at the function were Councillor Zakia Zubairi, Mr.
Ismail Chunara, Dr. Krishan Kumar, Mr. Pran Sharma, Mr. Naresh
Bharatiya, Mr. Inder syal, Tanveer Akhtar, Mrs. Divya Mathur and Jai
Verma.
