Cupful of Joy...

Joy unlimited. The saturday night's fever was too high for any thermometer to measure. A satellite thermal image of India in general and Mumbai in particular would have shown terrible global warming, warmth coming from the spirt of cricket oozing out of the sinews of men in blue. A historic day for India to win the WC championship after 1983. A great feat by a team that was often criticised by cricket pundits for several counts. But what counts most is not the statistics, but raising one's spirit at right time to a great height.

It is no exaggeration to say that the post-victory Saturday night turned out to be a combination of all festivals - Deepavali, Holi, Christmas, New Year, Ramdan, Nav Roz, Onam, Vishu, Baisakhi. And all the dance styles were displayed on the street of India. And to top all, the entire country was in prayer mode.

Saturday's World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka was a tug-o-war. Upto first 25 overs of Sri Lanka innings, India held the rope tight, but after that Sri Lanka did miracles thanks to a neat as well as quick 103 off 88 balls by Mahela Jayawardhane that set a formidable challenge with 275 on board. The rope was clearly moving towards Sri Lanka. When India started its innings, the departures of star batsmen Sehwag (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (18), the rope further moved nearer the winning line.

But with its glorious uncertainties cricket is more than a game. It is a drama, a real life story with ups and downs. Following several downs upto Sachin's return to pavilion, the buds in Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir (97) and Virat Kohli (35) blossomed with a massive 83 partnership, followed by another breezy and bright century partnership between Mahendra Singh Dhoni (91 not out) at a very crucial period when Sri Lanka speedsters were spilling fire and Muralitharan and Rajdeep were knitting nets to capture the lions.

In the tug-o-war the rope moved towards Indian side with Yuvaraj Singh (21 not out) providng the enormous pulling power with Dhoni with an unbroken partnership of 54. The match and the tournament ended with a massive six by Dhoni to win the coveted World Cup Championship 2011. A dream came true. The boys in blue made millions of their countrymen in India and abroad very proud by their nerve-breaking performance.
