It’s also the softest thing on my hand. A single stone, shaped like a heart, encased in a stylish gold ring. It ends with a slight wave, making space for the heart to rest, much like the chest cavity housing the heart in our bodies.

Building My Inner Voice

Opening my eyes to the 5 a.m. alarm to reach the hospital by 7, wearing whatever was at hand without thinking about how it looked, booking a cab without checking whether it was regular or prime, had become the routine throughout the monsoon last year. The sun played hide-and-seek with the clouds that season. Every day brought unpredictable weather.

Romance of Innovation (Updated)

I came back to rural town Phaltan from U.S.A. in 1981 after getting a Ph.D. and spending a few years teaching renewable energy at University of Florida, USA. In late 1981 when I returned, very few Indians with an IIT degree came back. Even the ones who did come back went to big cities like Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, etc. I went straight to rural Maharashtra which was as alien to me as any foreign country since I hardly knew the local language or the milieu.

The Visit to Alma Mater for An Alumni Meet

This photo-essay is a compilation of the author's experiences and the gist of the first ever Alumni Meet on 22 November 2025 in the Department of Zoology, University of Lucknow, India. My mother called me every day, asking about my well-being. When I told her I had this problem, she became worried. She called 3-4 times that day, asking about my well-being. She couldn't rest until I told her, "Mom, everything is fine now." That's how my mother is.

A Piercing Night

My friends and I were obsessed about getting our ears pierced. He was 73 years old and had been ailing on and off for some years. Just on 26th March I spent lovely two hours with him in his house in Mumbai. When I was born in 1966, it was called Bombay. I grew up in Bombay, living there from 1966 to 1985, before moving to the New York area, where I have lived ever since. Great teachers are born very rarely. It is a big fortune to meet them. My teachers especially Sri V. Venkata Sesha Sharma garu dawned as a bright star in the galaxy of teachers working at my school, Zilla Parishad High School, Veenavanka in Karimnagar district of Telangana state in India. In the rural area, the school served as an oasis of learning with him as Teacher, Telugu Pundit for teaching the boys and girls of many villages including mine, Ramakrishnapur. The school with the committed teachers quenched the thirst for knowledge and wisdom of students. Of all teachers, Sri VVS Sharma was the best to be the crest of the school in those days. All people respectfully and humbly called him, “Sharma Sir”.

Spokes of Life

In the labyrinth of Chawri Bazar, I found Raju, a man who pedaled not just a rickshaw but the hopes of a thousand passengers. Since Vedic times, it is known as Margashirsha after the Nakshatra (asterisms) Margasiras. It normally corresponds to November/December months of the Gregorian calendar. With the arrival of Margashirsha, Sarad autumn ends and the Hemant ritu winter season sets in and as the Maharshi described, niharaparuso lokah people feel frozen with fog. In the 29 years before 2000, the state had witnessed floods 21 times. However, the unprecedented floods in September–October 2000 will be remembered for decades to come. The intensity of the floods had surpassed even that of the landmark floods of 1978. All records of rainfall were broken. The water levels in all the major rivers in the Bhagirathi-Hooghly basin touched new heights. All roads, including the National Highway (NH-34) which connects South Bengal with North Bengal, were submerged. More than 21 million people were affected; about 2 million houses were damaged or destroyed and hundreds of lives were lost. Infrastructural losses were enormous. Bridges and culverts got destroyed at many places. There was devastation all around. The total estimated damage was about Rs.5660 crore, which is the highest for any single disaster in the state.

The Deluge 2000 - Devastating Floods of West Bengal

Floods are a regular feature in West Bengal. I had told the Secretary in that case I wouldn’t move my stuff and would stay in the Departmental guest house.

Curtain Calls: Big and Small

Sixth and final part of my memoirs of working as head of operations in Howrah Division of Eastern Railway in 1975-77

More on Managers and Those Who Keep the Wheels Turning

Fifth part of my memoirs of working as head of operations in Howrah Division of Eastern Railway in 1975-77

Howrah Division: Managing the Manager

Fourth part of my memoirs of working as head of operations in Howrah Division of Eastern Railway in 1975-77

More on Operations: Sahibganj loop

Third part of my memoirs of working as head of operations in Howrah Division of Eastern Railway in 1975-77

Howrah Division: The Umbrella Syndrome

Second part of Memoirs of my working as head of operations in Howrah Division of Eastern Railway in 1975-76

Howrah Division: Mission Accomplished

When I joined Howrah Division as Senior Divisional Operating Superintendent (T), (Sr DOS (T)) towards the end of November 1986, MK Sinha IRSME was Divisional Superintendent (DS) and AK Guharaja IRSE was Deputy DS. I had cordial relations with both. Sinha was DME (Power) Asansol when I was posted as Divisional Safety Officer Asansol. He let me have a free hand, especially after the success of some of the measures I had initiated.

Brief Return to Commercial Department: Accident Claims

Memoir of my working on Eastern Railway as Claims Officer for claims resulting from an accident involving casualties in 1975

Memories of a Receding Past: 40

This was my third assignment in Delhi. From the 1970s to 1990s, almost in every decade I came to Delhi on a posting and every time I had problems in having a house of my entitlement allotted to me. There was so much of corruption. A batch-mate of mine told me he had been asked to pay up Rs. 70000 as bribe to get a government house of his entitlement. He said even the minister was in it. Seeing all this I gave up pursuing the matter and eventually I was allotted a flat on first floor on Vinay Marg in Chanakyapuri meant for deputy secretaries whereas I was of the rank of a joint secretary having hit the top of the scale three years earlier.

An Ode to My Husband

It was 26th January some five years back. He was posted as Sub-divisional Officer at a nearby place called Chakghat. It is different story how there is stagnation for general category officers in state services and how one ends up being at the same position where one started. It is a different saga, not to be told here.

Memories of a Receding Past: 39

A brief description of the interesting outing to Vasai in Mumbai

Memories of a Receding Past: 38

Looking back on days spent in Mumbai around 35 years ago

Phoenix - 40th Anniversary

Something terrific happened 40 years ago. In 1980, a company called Centuri released an arcade game called 'Phoenix'. Phoenix was the very first video game that I played, and I began playing it in 1981 at Kroger in Morristown, Tennessee. I put a quarter in the machine and when I started playing it, I fell in love.

Memories of a Receding Past: 37

On another day Sukumar came home and asked whether we would be willing to take a trip to one of the drilling platforms of Bombay High. My first reaction was who would allow us on a drilling platform and then one had to take a ride in a helicopter. Logistics were plainly against us but Sukumar with his never-say-die-attitude would have none of it. He brusquely told me to leave all that to him.

Memories of a Receding Past: 36

At Bombay I met up with a batch-mate who was from the Customs and Excise Service. He was working as Collector Customs, Bombay. Sukumar Mukhopadhyay, that was his name, was a very sincere worker and a very good friend. I recall two very interesting trips out of Bombay with him. One was a trip to Uran in the yacht of a Customs officer.
