At last Jadavpur University impasse is over. While admittedly violation of a young woman's modesty is unfortunate the long drawn student agitation as well as insensitivity of the Vice Chancellor too is deplorable. But Bengal has been suffering from the ailment of political allegiance since decades. Over and above adult franchise at the age of 18 (a BJP gift in Indian political scenario) and student politics has played havoc in Indian polity and society. I for one would like adult franchise at the age of 24 after an average person has gone through studies, training and gainfully employed in society; and not before that. Nobody should be a candidate in an election before the age of 30 and should not be a minister before the age of 35. No minister should hold two terms of office. And no person should be in active politics beyond the age of 65. Further, elections throughout the year should be avoided. Governance should be made less shrill as is the current norm. In short we require electoral reforms urgently.
