Skepticism - 2

Professor Linus Pauling was born this day (Feb. 28) one hundred and twelve years ago. He was a prominent American chemist, biochemist and co-founder of the fields of Quantum Chemistry and Molecular Biology. In addition he was a peace activist and educator. He also had the unique distinction of being the only person to be awarded two unshared two Nobel Prizes (Chemistry in 1954 and Peace in 1962).

His advice to the people of younger generation was that they should respectfully listen to elders and men of distinction but not necessarily believe all that is spoken by them. Further he said

“Year by year and century by century the world progresses as the members of the younger generation find out what was wrong among the things that their elders said. So you must always be skeptical and always think for yourselves”.

Professor Pauling’s call to the youngsters is explicit and loud and clear. There is an inherent message in this for parents and teachers of young children. They would do well in encouraging and promoting free and independent thinking on the part of their wards who are of impressionable age.
