Mahashivaratri Greetings ...

Today is Mahashivaratri, both the birth and wedding day of Lord Shiva, considered as the greatest devotee of Lord Vishnu. However, Lord Shiva is called Mahadeva, the lord of the gods!! Lord Shiva is one of the Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. Shiva stands for Truth (Satyam), imortality (Shivam) and Beauty (Sundaram). An innocent god (Bholenath), he is easily satisfied (Ashutosh). Meditation is Lord Shiva's invention.

Lord Shiva is poor man's god, a socialist, lives in cremation ground, has no palace.

He is popular with the demons, too, who had His blessings to win the three worlds and be immortal putting Lord Vishnu at tight spots to eliminate them at right time before they devour all. Lord Shiva stands for art, music and dance, tandav being His innovation. He is the ideal husband; therefore women worship Him for longevity of their husbands and unmarried girls worship Him to get handsome and good husbands.

The new moon in Phalgun (Feb-March according to English calendar) is dedicated to Shiva worship in India and many countries across the world. In India, the people in Kashmir worship Him with great devotion and ferver. It is considered very auspicious. On this day people take bath very early before the sunrise, fast the whole day, sing devotional songs and offer prayers.

Let us too say our prayers to this lovely god on this auspicious day.
