Management of Chronic Inflammatory Demylinating Polyneuropathy

Abstract

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is an acquired immune mediated inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nervous system. The disorder is sometimes called chronic relapasing polyneuropathy. It is closely related to Guillain Barre syndrome and is considered the chronic counterpart of that acute disease. Its symptoms are also similar to progressive inflammatory neuropathy. As per modern management is concerned, there is no established treatment for it except steroids which causes lots of side effects. Hence Ayurvedic treatment is one of best for management of Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. The present case study has focus effectiveness of Ayervrdic therapy.

Introduction

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is a neurological disorder characterised by progressive weakness and impaired sensory function of limbs. The disorder sometimes called chronic relapsing polyneuropathy, is caused by damage to myelin sheath of the peripheral nerves. Although it can occur at any age and in both genders, it is more common in young adults & in male. It often presents with symptoms that include tingling or numbness, weakness of limbs, areflexia, Fatigue and abnormal sensation. Treatment of this disease includes corticosteroids with immunosupressent, plasmapheresis & Immunoglobins. Treatment of Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy by Ayurveda involve the use of such medicines which have specific action on nerve cells and on entire nervous system. These medicines help in gradual & progressive regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves & thereby gradually reduce symptoms. Medicines may also have to given for immunomodulation, so as to reduce autoimmuno reaction to prevent further damage to nervous system.
