Samudga means samput i.e box. Those sandhies which form box like structure comes under the term samudga Sandhi.

Samudga Sandhi is present at Ansapitha, Guda, Bhaga, Nitamba. Guda, Bhaga, Nitamba together forms box like structure shroni i.e. bony pelvic cavity. Therefore sandhi’s present at bony pelvic cavity comes under samudga sandhi.

Ankylosing Spondylitis:

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic, progressive inflammatory disease ,seriously affecting the musculo-skeletal system. The patient undergoes many structural changes causing serious disabilities, significantly affecting the quality of life.

If the principles of Ayurveda are studied in modern scientific way, both in respect of its approach to disease & normal status, especially in relation to sharira, we may be able to understand our concepts & methods with scientific proofs. This is because many concepts explained in our literature are also prevalent in today’s era. For the up-gradation of any science it is necessary to clarify certain unsaid facts so it is essential to understand structural anatomy of Samudga Sandhi & to establish its correlation with Sacro-iliac joint. Thus this dissertation is small effort in the field of Ayurveda by studying the changes in Samudga Sandhi (Sacroiliac joint) in Ankylosing Spondylitis. Study of modern view & ayurvedic view will be helpful for future researches, academicians, students & practitioner of ayurveda to treat the disease.
