Clashing Faces of Old and New

Well. I know it is a multimillion-dollar question for which answers are still being sought. But a recent report I read in one of the website books says so: In India, there are now 149 million people aged 60 or older, accounting for 10.5% of the population. By 2050, it is projected to surge to 347 million, and as a segment of the total population, 20.8%. By 2046, the number of elderly people in India will surpass the population of children aged 0-14.

These pose though the happiness of elderly family members' longevity, at the same time raising great concern about the future generation of the same family. Nowadays, invariably, the younger generation couples are in jobs that are very well-paying with attractive benefits. This throws a spanner on having more children and taking care of them both physically as well as financially.

Good education today is not only difficult but also expensive. Therefore, I find most of the young gen couples either have a single or two kids maximum, and also take care of their professional lives. It cannot be blamed on any argument; also, not be berated as ‘selfishness’.

In our country, for eons, we talked of large families with a dozen kids and elders also in various age groups. In the present circumstances, this scenario is next to impossible.

To be honest, most of the middle and young gen prefer to save or borrow and invest money to buy more properties, gold, and fill their wardrobes.

Ageing, whether it extends wisdom or not, definitely impacts mental and physical health. Besides forgetfulness, absent-mindedness, quick temper, and intolerance, older people often develop a nearly invisible resentment or anger towards the younger generation. Analyzing this objectively from a psychological perspective makes it quite understandable.

In the milieu, the sons and daughters, and especially the grandchildren, will give the least care or respect to the oldies at home. It is the compulsion of the times. Take any media or ads. They all focus most of the time only on the happiness of the youth and not on the aged. Well, ads are there for Senior Citizens Home and pain balms. But, only youth will be celebrated, not the aged.

With health, finance, and declining mental stability with ageing, it is wise for the senior citizens to detach themselves from many unsolicited advices and interactions.

Does my Opinion sound Crude or Bitter? Yes. Truths are always Raw and Bitter.
