Indian Knowledge system in a Digital World

In the 21st century, as artificial intelligence, data science, and digital platforms redefine human life, India’s ancient wisdom traditions are finding renewed relevance. The Indian Knowledge System (IKS), rooted in the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana and Mahabharata, represents not merely a body of texts but a civilizational consciousness. Today, this vast intellectual heritage is entering the digital world with remarkable momentum.

For centuries, knowledge in India flourished through oral traditions, gurukul systems, and handwritten manuscripts. However, fragile palm-leaf texts and rare commentaries remained inaccessible to the wider public. Digital initiatives have changed this reality. Institutions such as the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and the Digital Library of India are preserving manuscripts and making them available online. What was once limited to a few scholars is now accessible to students and researchers across the globe. Bhasini the language app developed indigenously is translating from various languages. Indian languages are being developed in digital medium making these user friendly. The recent Global AI summit in New Delhi has brought many platforms together to boost application of AI for mass consumption. Sarvam is such a grand intiative furthermore ancient Indian philosophies could be linked with the modern digital technology with the help of AI. Sarvam also helps in 10 Indian languages and it will help Indian languages and literatures to integrate with Indian ethos and spirit.Indian AI technology is at nascent stage at the present time but in years to come it will take a giant leap in developing its indigenous AI technology.

Technology is not merely preserving tradition; it is reinterpreting it. The grammatical precision of Panini is inspiring computational linguistics. Ayurvedic principles from texts like the Charaka Samhita are being examined through data analytics and integrative medicine research. Yoga and meditation, once confined to ashrams, now reach millions through digital platforms and mobile applications.

The National Education Policy 2020 has further strengthened this movement by encouraging the integration of IKS into mainstream education. The Indian Knowledge Systems Division under AICTE and the University Grants Commission are promoting research, digital archives, and interdisciplinary programs that bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary knowledge systems. Enrichment of NCERT syllabus by incorporating the elements of Bhartiye Gyan Sampada is a noble attempt of Ministry of Education to teach students ethics , simple texts theoretically and practically through activities. Bhartiye Shikshan Mandal is committed to inculcate Bhartiyata in Education through Swadhaya, lectures and practical training under the tireless leadership and guidance of Acharya Shankaranand jee. Digitization of Indian texts, sensitisation to Indian value system has already brought a revolution in education.

Yet, the digital turn is not without concerns. The speed of information sharing often leads to oversimplification and commercialization of sacred traditions. Context, commentary, and philosophical depth can be lost in translation. Therefore, digitization must be accompanied by scholarly rigor and cultural sensitivity. Needless to say, Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal serves as ombudsman by engaging scholars ,subject experts to ensure that Bhartiyata is not diluted.

The digital world offers India an unprecedented opportunity—to present its knowledge traditions not as relics of the past, but as living systems relevant to global challenges such as ecological imbalance, mental health crises, and ethical dilemmas in technology. The Indian Knowledge System emphasizes harmony between human beings, nature, and the cosmos—an idea profoundly needed in today’s fragmented world. The digital world offers immense possibilities by creating structured databases of traditional ecological knowledge, Digital Sanskrit corpora for AI training and reviving regional knowledge traditions. It will also establish global dialogue between IKS and modern science.

IKS can contribute significantly to sustainable development, holistic healthcare, ethical technology and environmental consciousness.Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a nuanced approach to AI not as an autonomous force driven solely by data and algorithms, but as an extension of human aspirations, ethics, and dignity. Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi  encapsulated  human-centric vision in the acronym M.A.N.A.V., presenting a roadmap where technological advancement progresses in harmony with societal values: Moral and Ethical Systems, Accountable Governance, National Sovereignty, Accessible and Inclusive AI, and Valid and Legitimate Systems. This vision clears India's road map to a world where technology doesn't overpower humans and misuse AI indulging in Deep Seek and false techniques.

As India moves forward in its technological journey, reconnecting with its intellectual roots can ensure that progress remains humane and holistic. In a rapidly digitizing civilization, the wisdom of the ages may well become the guiding light for the future. AI is going to bring perceptible changes in digitization of valuable texts otherwise lost in the colonial India. It will further accelerate the process by changing the perspectives, sharpening the vision and approaches to the teaching and learning process. In the digital era, Indian Knowledge System is not merely being archived—it is being reinterpreted, reconnected, and revitalized. If technology is used responsibly, the timeless wisdom of IKS can guide the future of humanity toward balance, harmony, and holistic progress.
