Reading a book used to be something people did all the time. It was not something you did in your free time but it was also a big part of our culture. Reading helped people use their imagination become wiser and understand others better. The younger generation spends a lot of time on media looking at short videos and posts. They do not have a lot of time to read books or poetry. People’s attention spans are getting shorter. They are not as patient as they used to be. Even when people do read they like to read versions of books or listen to someone else read them. They do not like to read the book by themselves.
Experts think this is a problem. Reading is not about getting information. It helps people understand others think critically. Be creative. If people stop reading a lot they might not be as good at thinking for themselves. Literature, like the works of Shakespeare or Tagore gives people perspectives that they cannot get from social media.
The Decline of Reading Habits in the Digital Age is not all news though. The internet has also made it easier for people to read books. People can read books on their phones or computers. There are websites where people can talk about books. The problem is that people need to find a balance between what's easy and what is good for them.
Parents, teachers and people who make rules have a role to play in getting people to read again. Schools can start book clubs. Have hours where people tell stories. Libraries can become places where people in the community can go to. Importantly people need to make an effort to put down their phones and start reading again.
In a time when everything's fast and people are easily distracted reading is something that people can do to slow down. Reading reminds people that some things, like the knowledge you get from reading a book are very valuable and cannot be replaced by anything.
