India's Position Falls Compared to 2024 Britain at 5th, India at 6th Rank, Reveals IMF's Latest Data. Unrecoverable Blow to India Due to Rupee Fall. Rupee Declined by 62% in Modi's 12 Years of Rule – If this continues, are the dreams of the third largest economy just illusions?!
Under Modi's rule, the country's economy is deteriorating day by day. The BJP government's announcements that they will transform India into the world's third-largest economy by 2028 have been proven hollow. With the falling exchange value of the rupee against the dollar, India's position in the global economy is continuously declining. The fact that the country's GDP rank has fallen from 5th to 6th place in 2025, as revealed in the latest IMF data, is a cause for concern.
The claims of BJP leaders that the economy is racing ahead under their rule have been proven false once again. India, with the world's largest population, is no longer even in the top 5 of the largest economies. According to the latest GDP rankings released by the IMF for 2025, India's rank has dropped from 5th to 6th place. Consequently, the propaganda by Modi and the entire BJP family that India will become the third-largest economy by 2028 stands exposed as hollow. Economists state that the main reasons for this are the derailment of economic progress and the troubles faced by the rupee under Modi's rule. In 2024, India's GDP was recorded at $3.5 trillion. During the same period, the UK's GDP was $3.4 trillion. Thus, India became the 5th largest economy that year, while the UK was relegated to 6th place. However, within one year, these ranks have reversed. According to the latest IMF estimates, the country's economy was valued at $3.92 trillion in 2025. Meanwhile, the UK's economy surged to $4 trillion. Consequently, Britain, which was one rank behind India, has pushed India aside and jumped to 5th place. India, which should have been in 5th place, is now confined to 6th. Notably, while the Modi family extensively publicized their achievement when India reached 5th rank in 2024, they are now silent.
The Rupee's Blow:
The exchange value of the rupee against the dollar is continuously falling. Under Modi's rule, the rupee has depreciated to an unprecedented level in history. In the 12 years of BJP rule, the rupee's exchange value against the dollar has declined by a massive ₹36.19 (61.69 percent). The rupee's fall not only burdens domestic imports but could also collapse the economy. It is this rupee that has brought trouble to India in the latest IMF GDP rankings as well. Compared to the dollar, the rupee exchange rate fell from ₹85.64 at the end of 2024 to ₹89.88 at the end of 2025. This means that in the single year of 2025, the rupee's exchange value decreased by ₹4.24. On March 27 last year, the rupee's exchange value fell to 94.85 for the first time. At one point, it even touched the 95 mark. With the rupee's decline continuing, there are fears that the country's GDP rank might fall further this year. The IMF estimates that due to the rupee's fall, India may remain confined to the 6th position among the world's largest economies this year as well.
